Our History

Created in 2024 by American Society of Freudian Psychoanalysis, Freud Academy was established as its educational platform dedicated to the study, transmission and circulation of the Freudian tradition.

An academy dedicated to transmission

Freud Academy was created to turn intellectual continuity into education.

Freud Academy was created in 2024 by American Society of Freudian Psychoanalysis as the educational expression of an institutional project dedicated to preserving, studying and transmitting the tradition begun by Sigmund Freud.

Its creation arose from the need to establish a space specifically devoted to education: an environment where students, professionals and readers interested in psychoanalysis could find organized study paths, courses, reference materials and editorial work connected to a clear Freudian identity.

From the beginning, Freud Academy was conceived not merely as a course catalog, but as a platform for transmission. This means understanding education as the continuation of an intellectual tradition that has crossed generations and remains relevant to the study of psychic life, culture and society.

01
The origin

Created by the American Society of Freudian Psychoanalysis.

The origin of Freud Academy is directly linked to the American Society of Freudian Psychoanalysis, an institution dedicated to preserving, studying and continuing Freudian thought internationally.

The American Society is the broader institutional structure of this project. Its scope includes association life, intellectual reflection, editorial production, exchange among participants from different countries and the historical continuity of the Freudian tradition.

With the creation of Freud Academy in 2024, specifically educational activities gained their own identity. The Academy became the space for organizing courses, study programs, teaching materials and training initiatives linked to the Society.

This distinction allows each structure to fulfill a defined role: the American Society maintains the broader institutional horizon, while Freud Academy focuses its work on education and the structured transmission of knowledge.

Freudian tradition

Preserving does not mean merely repeating.

Freud Academy’s identity is grounded in the Freudian tradition. This means recognizing in Sigmund Freud’s work not merely a chapter in the history of psychology, but a set of problems, concepts and methods that continue to demand reading, study and debate.

The unconscious, repression, dreams, symptoms, drives, sexuality, psychic conflict, transference and culture are among the themes that run through this legacy. Over more than a century, these concepts have influenced not only clinical work, but also philosophy, literature, the arts, anthropology and the interpretation of society.

For Freud Academy, transmitting this tradition does not mean turning it into an unchanging set of formulas. It means returning to the texts, understanding their contexts, preserving conceptual precision and creating the conditions for each new generation to study them seriously.

An intellectual tradition remains alive when it continues to be studied, discussed and transmitted.
02
Education and knowledge

Psychoanalysis in dialogue with other fields.

Although its central identity is linked to Freudian psychoanalysis, Freud Academy recognizes that understanding human beings does not develop in isolation.

Questions formulated by psychoanalysis often meet points of contact with biology, the humanities, anthropology, history, philosophy and cultural studies. Dialogue between different fields can broaden questions and offer new perspectives, provided that it does not erase their methodological differences.

This interdisciplinary openness was present in the institutional conception that gave rise to the Academy. The aim is not to dilute psychoanalysis into other disciplines, but to allow Freudian thought to take part in broader intellectual conversations.

For this reason, courses and publications may bring psychoanalytic theory, clinical work, culture, intellectual history and scientific knowledge together whenever this encounter contributes to a more rigorous understanding of the problems under study.

The Academy’s work

Courses, studies and editorial production.

Freud Academy’s work is organized primarily around education and the production of knowledge.

Its courses and study paths were designed to provide structured access to psychoanalytic theory and themes related to the Freudian tradition. Each program has its own objectives and characteristics, presented on its respective academic page.

Alongside its educational activity, Freud Academy maintains an editorial front dedicated to publishing articles and study materials. This work broadens access to psychoanalytic concepts and creates a permanent space for reading for students, professionals and interested readers.

Education and publication are part of the same idea of transmission: knowledge should not remain confined to a classroom or a single moment of training. It needs to circulate, be consulted again and remain available for new readings.
